RF Code and Geist integrate wireless sensors and PDUs

RF Code, provider of RFID-based monitoring solutions, has integrated its wireless sensors with data center PDUs and monitoring software by Geist. The companies said the integration would create savings for customers by eliminating the need for wired Ethernet connections for power monitoring systems.

RF Code’s R170 PDU RFID (radio-frequency identification) tags can now plug into PDUs from Geist’s Satellite Current Monitoring line. RF Code readers collect monitoring data, which is then streamed into one of either company’s monitoring software.

RF Code’s software is called Sensor Manager and Geist’s platform is called Environet.

The integrated solution includes the PDU, the sensors, the readers and one of the two software products.

There is a number of players in the growing market for wireless monitoring solutions for data center power infrastructure and temperature and humidity data. Companies in the space include Synapsense, Packet Power and Cisco, following its acquisition of Arch Rock, a provider of wireless sensors.

There are also numerous companies that sell monitoring and management applications. They often partner with providers of sensor technology to integrate and sell their products jointly. RF Code, for example, partnered in March of 2010 with Modius, a San Francisco-based provider of monitoring and management software.

Gartner said in November 2010 that the use of monitoring tools in data centers remained low and urged users to start implementing such tools as means to manage and predict capacity requirements and to control operational costs.

In June 2010, Emerson released results of a survey that found monitoring and management capabilities had become number-one priority for North American data center operators. The same survey conducted in 2007 put such capabilities in sixth place on the list of operators’ priorities.
