THE Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company has been awarded the ISO certification.

In a colourful event at a Kisumu hotel, KIWASCO managing director David Onyango said plans are at an advanced stage to extend water services to areas currently outside the company’s network. “Kisumu has walked a long arduous journey in trying to solve its water problems that led to periodic outbreaks of water-borne diseases,” said Onyango adding: “Through quality management systems we have adopted today, our customers will now get nothing but the best services.”

Onyango said the company has over the last two years invested heavily in systems and structures that will ensure operational efficiency and institutional strengthening. “We are committed to supplying quality water that meets the needs of our customers, conform to regulatory standards and meet requirements of the Quality Management Systems,” said Onyango, adding: “This is an important milestone in our history as we are not only asserting our commitment to provision of quality service, but also progressively contributing towards realisation of Vision 2030.”

The managing director said company intends to connect 40,000 customers in the next five years. “We are doing network expansion and renewal all over the city and we intend to source for funds and forge more partnerships to enable us realise the 40,000 customer base target,” said Onyango, adding that this will increase water service coverage from the current 57 per cent to more than 80 per cent.

Speaking at the launch, KIWASCO chairman Israel Agina said the company plans to decentralise payment of water bills to reduce inconveniences to its customers. “We will identify more strategic payment points and partners such as banks, supermarkets, chemists, post offices where customers can make payments,” he said.

At the same time, the chairman said that KIWASCO aims to expand services to informal settlements through partnering with community members in the Delegated Management Model to ensure that residents of the areas are adequately supplied with water. “Over 60 per cent of residents of Kisumu city live in the informal settlements and they too need to be served with clean and affordable water. The programme will serve informal settlement and we are already doing that in Nyalenda and Obunga, the largest informal settlements in Kisumu,” said Agina.

Kenya Bureau of Standards managing director Eva Oduor said KIWASCO has been granted the certification after rigorous assessment of their processes to ensure they comply with the requirements of KS ISO 9001:2008; Quality Management System. Said Oduor: “KEBS can thus attest that KIWASCO’s certification to ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System will create confidence for potential customers by consistently delivering quality products and services all the time.” She further said that the certification demands commitment to the principle of continual improvement thus the management and the entire staff of KIWASCO should ensure that they live up to the expectations of the ISO certification.
